Research examines links between human and planetary health

3 FEB , 2025

Dr. Eileen Gilder, a research fellow at the University of Auckland, is investigating the links between human and planetary health as climate change and environmental degradation introduce new health challenges. With a $29,830 grant from the Health Research Council, her team aims to identify the skills and tools health professionals need to address these emerging issues.

Gilder, an experienced nurse and researcher, highlights the growing health risks from rising temperatures, increasing wildfires, and environmental pollution in New Zealand. Her research, a collaboration between the University’s schools of nursing and pharmacy, will assess climate-related healthcare needs, gather insights from health professionals, and develop strategies for a climate-resilient workforce.

Inspired by her role in the global Planetary Health Report Card initiative, Gilder hopes the project will encourage health professionals to recognize their role in both responding to and mitigating climate change’s effects.
